MG MGB Technical - Replacing rotors...what else?


My ' 80 LE's brake rotors need to be replaced as they're pulsing when I apply brakes. What are the best pads to use? I'm thinking of the green stuff pads, but don't know much about them. Also, my calipers seem okay, but should I replace them as well?

David - I replaced the rotors on our 66 MGB with slotted rotors and used the green stuff pads with the and have been very pleased with the performance. there has beenn zero squealing withteh green stuff pads. Cheers - Dave

I'm running Green Stuff pads with stock rotors on the blue GT and I swear they work better than the stock ones. There's also much less pad dust on the wheels.

I'm inclined to say that if your pedal feels solid and your brakes pull evenly that your calipers are probably OK, but erring on the side of safety is always the better idea. At least calipers are always accessible.

I just replaced my Green Stuff EBC pads with stock Lockheed pads. The Green Stuff are good pads but they require slightly more pedal effort to stop the car. The advantages to the EBC pads are less brake dust and they work better when the brakes are very hot. But stock pads work better at cooler temperatures as in daily driving.

I just replaced my rotors with stock, along with EBC pads and SS lines. I also changed out my caliper seals and applied a bit of phosporic acid 'derust' to clean up the caliper area between the two seals. Replacing the dust seals was a tricky job, as I bent a couple of the dust retaining seals, but luckily was able to refit the old ones. Now have a nice, firm pedal and excellent stopping power. Perhaps it's the new SS lines, but I have no issues with extra pedal effort.

Signs of a bad caliper(s) are pulling to one side on braking, or uneven pad or rotor wear. If you haven't got these, probably no need to change out your calipers unless you have cash buring a hole in your pocket, in which case rebuilt or even new units are available.

As far as various reported problems people have found with EBC pads (still squeal, lots of dust, more effort when cold, wear out quickly), on the box of my EBC's it says they've changed the composition of the material seven times since first release...I'm not sure if this represents good R & R or premature product release, but my experiences have been postive.

Thanks for the info, guys. I didn't know very much about the EBC's, but now I have an idea. I'm also going to order some assorted shims for the wheel bearings.
