You will find two links I posted showing pullers that will make the job easy without damaging the steering column.

Several years ago a friend asked me for the steering wheel from my '77 parts car. Once that center nut is removed, his advice for removing wheels on '77-'80 models was to AGGRESSIVELY push on one side of the wheel while pulling on the other (180 degrees opposite), then reverse forces, as if attempting to rock the wheel on the pinion. He told me you absolutely cannot break or damage anything with this method and that it ALWAYS works. I tried it; I didn't break anyting, and it worked. I'm not taking responsibility for your results, your mileage may vary, yada-yada-yada.

Another way:

Loosen nut and unscrew untill top of nut is flush with the top of the steering column.
Squat on seat with your knees under the wheel and pull backwards with knees.
Using a hammer AND a brass or copper drift, give the end of the steering column a good whack (or two or three). Best to hit hard with a small hammer rather than thump it with a large one.

Remove nut, remove steering wheel.

Using the puller described in my earlier post, the steering wheel will come off with no effort and no damage. You could probably rent a gear puller from a chain auto parts store for just a couple of dollars.
