MG MGB Technical - removal of dash vs. steering column

I plan to alter and repaint the early style metal dash on my GT. Removing it would mean I have to loosen the upper mount of the steering column.
Do I have to realign it afterwards or can I go without that? As I don't have the pointers shown in my Haynes, I'm kind of curious...

Jochen, Keep track of spacers and install them in the same locations they came from and you should be ok.

Make it easier on yourself and remove the steering column all together.

With the bolts out of the two brackets on the steering column, it will drop out of the way to easily remove the metal dash. Removing the steering wheel makes it a lot easier.

As for the dash. I do recommend looking into having the dash powder coated in a black wrinkle finish. The finish is amasing and it is much more durable than the original paint. Not sure of costs in Germany, but I just has a metal dash (including glove box door) powder coated for $50.
