MG MGB Technical - Rear Didd drain and filler plugs
Does anybody know the size of the alum key for the rear diff fill and drain plugs (I feel and oil change coming on) Brian
Brian Davis
Brian, There are several non factory suggestions in the archives although none I read mentioned allen keys most suggest the 1/2" drive extension among other things. Worth a look, Merry Christmas, Cheers, Pete.

Its tapered and square so an Allen key is no good. There are drain plug spanners available, but I have always used the 1/2" drive of a socket ratchet (no extension) pressed into the plug with hand-pressure without difficulty. If you've never had this one off before YMMV.

An axle I bought had allen heads in the drain plugs, so they're not all square. If they're the square type then Halfords do a multi-head axle plug tool for only a few quid and it saves messing around with your socket set. If it's the allen type, I believe it to be 3/8" but my memory frequently fails me so don't quote me on that :o) Hope this helps, -- Olly

Gradually grind the sides of a 1/2" socket adapter so that it tapers until you find a good fit.

As Olly mentioned I also have a rear end with a hex drain plug. It came from a rubber bumper car with rear anti roll bar brackets. I just checked and it is 3/8" so Olly's memory is good. FWIW, Clifton

Thanks Guys 3/8th would seen about correct, I’ll get one and try. Olly – West Midlands, where about’s?, I’m Balsall Common, Solihull, anywhere close? Brian

It also seems like I've seen an 'x' type lug wrench which had a tapered square on one end. It's been long ago and I never did find out what it was for, but I bet that's it. Jim
