MG MGB Technical - Rear bumper removal

Hello to all of you mg specialists.
After many, many years of dreaming, now here it is. I finally bought a lovely white '78 B last july. Great summer driving it but now it's over, winter has arrived. Lot of snow this morning. So the li'l white beauty is garaged for a long, long, long ..... winter. But just to keep in touch with her I'm in a process to have it re-painted and here is the problem: I stripped the car of almost everything. I am now at removing the rear bumper (rubber obviously) and it seem that things won't go as well as the rest of the job ( I suspect Murphy to be related to it since it's the last thing to be removed). What I discovered so far is that two studs attached the bumper from beneath the car and three inside the trunk (boot). These studs have nuts inside bumper (kind of square tube) and they tend to turn inside the bumper when I try to undo the ones under the car. I suspect (but haven't tried yet) that the three inside the trunk will give me the same treatment. Is there a way to undo these nuts that have driven me nut so far.

Thank you for your advises.

If you can get a nut splitter on them use that - otherwise you will have to cut through the nuts with a saw or a Dremel.

This is a common problem!

Thank you for this one Chris. I like the idea of a nut splitter since the location is not easy to reach with a Dremel. But now, question #2: what will happen when I'm gonna put the bumper back to its place ??. These nutty nuts will keep turning as I will try to tighten the whole thing.

Thank you
M.G.

Answer #2 is to weld the studs to the bumper before you refit it.

Problem solved; Thank you !
