MG MGB Technical - Quartertlights - Can you see the difference?
Hi everyone, Been a while since I asked a question here. Looking forward to hearing from you all again. Here's some questions for you... I have a 67B roadster. I am wanting to replace the drivers side quarterlight assembly. Now, I have the option to get sent to me a quatertlight from a 73 roadster. Apparently it is a stainless quarterlight. My passenger one is in nice bright new chrome. My question is... Is there a noticiable differnce (visually) with the quarterlights if I installed this on my B. Obviously, the handle would need replacing. If there is a difference, is it possible to chrome stainless to match the other side... or is this not possible? Finally... Are there any other physical differences between them I should be aware of? Thanks I look forward to hearing from you Safety Fast! Mark

Forgot to add... Would polished stainless be comparable/indecernable to chrome? My gut feeling is that they are poles apart. Am I right? Thanks Mark

Polished stainless and chrome do have a different appearance. I'm not sure about 'B' quarterlights, as I've only ever had one - a '67 roadster - but there is certainly a big difference between chrome and stainless with midgets. Chrome quarterlights have a rounded profile, whilst SS are much squarer/flatter.

Mark, evrthing I have ever read about chrome plating says it is impossible to chrome plate stainless. Tony

Don't mix them. Others might not catch it (immediately), but you will - every time you look. I've reconditioned both and (IMHO) the stainless will never have the depth of polished chrome.

Thanks for the tips guys. As usual... your advice is much appreciated. I don't think I will mix and match. Chrome it is all the way now! Cheers Mark
