MG MGB Technical - Problems with indicators and fuel gauge

Hello

I’ve got an electrical problem with a 1970 MGB GT.

Every so often her indicators, brake lights, tach, wipers, heater and fuel gauge will stop working. It only happens occasionally and they will start working again without me having to touch anything. Could it be an issue with the voltage stabilizer or is it more likely to be something else and how can it be fixed?

Thanks

B.

The voltage stabiliser only feeds the fuel gauge on a UK 70. The green circuit fuse feeds all the things you have mentioned, and is the most probably cause - corroded fuse in the holders, corroded spades, and there is a rivetted connection on the back of the fusebox which can also cause problems. Glass fuses have also been known to develop dry joints where the wire is soldered to the end-cap.

Thanks Paul.

I've just rolled the fuses in their holders and everything seems to be working again.

Beth - I had the same problem last week. The fuse looked OK, but turned out to be faulty.

It's probably the "dry joint" thing Paul mentioned.

Just put in a new fuse to put your mind at rest.

I have had this very same problem on my 72 BGT, it turns out that the loom that enters the engine bay from the bulkhead has a dry joint in the bullet connector, everytime I touched the loom it all came on again, the trouble is it also knocked out the electric fuel pump! so when it happens and your driving you know you've got 2-3 minutes before the carbs starve and die. also the main 30amp fuse that feeds this circuit may look ok, but its possible that the connection inside the glass has parted from the end cap. First stop is to replace the fuse regardless whether it looks "unblown" then check all the connectors on the loom near the pedalbox.
