MG MGB Technical - Petronix for 45DM4 distributor problem

I've been trying to fit a Petronix unit into my lucas 45DM4 distributor since moss lists the lucas module at $280 (the DM4 is the electronic dist with external module). The problem is that the Petronix instruction say to remove the old trigger wheel, and it seems to be on there *really* tight. Has anyone out there done this particular retrofit and have advice? I'm reluctant to apply extreme force because the supply of alternative distributors seems to have gotten a bit thin. Moss used to have rebuilt 25D and new 45D, but they don't show as available now (neither do the 25Ds that Autozone used to carry).

It's a 78B, and will still have to pass one more smog test here in CA, so I'm hesitant to consider the Mallory as a fallback (even aside from the price).

Tom,

The trigger just slides over the distributor shaft, although snugly. You might try to apply a couple of squirts of penetrating oil, let it soak-in for a time, and then pry upward on the base of the trigger with a small screwdriver. Its easier if you pull the distributor and do the job on the bench.

I was afraid this was the answer. Mine seems to be pressed on very tightly. I've got it out of the car and pulled the upper half of the shaft off; it looks like if I take off the centifigal advance mechanism I can use a press on it, so that is the next step.

Sometimes it pays to go back to the problem the next morning... I took the distributor, clamped the old trigger wheel in the vise, and tapped the top of the shaft with a hammer - came right off.

Tom,

The Lucas CEI module is actually a Delco HEI ignition module that was used on millions of GM vehicles.

Although the pertronix is a good unit, the Delco unit is in my opinion far superior.

You are correct in that Moss is severely overcharging for their Lucas module when it actually only contains the $29 Delco module that you can purcase from any discount parts store.

I would suggest looking on ebay or checking with the MG wrecking yards for a used Lucas module "container".

I have had the 45DM4 Delco ignition in my B for several years without any problem.
