MG MGB Technical - one more clutch question

New clutch, new slave hose, re-honed slave. the problem that I am now having is that the clutch engages at the very top of the pedle travel. I only need to depress the clutch about a 1/4 to 1/2 an inch to shift. Well this cause the clutch to wear quicker? Tom

Well now there's a thing. Did you fit a complete three part clutch and was it preferably a Borg & Beck unit? Is there clearance at the fork i.e can you manually move the fork back against the pushrod against the slave cyl spring pressure. This may be difficult but the pushrod should be reasonably movable even sideways otherwise it looks like there is pressure on the release bearing. Crack the bleed nipple slightly to see if there is contained pressure and then check that there is freeplay at the pedal end. If not adjust to obtain the correct figure. I assume that the master cylinder is the correct bore and this also applies to the slave. If all the above is OK then test clutch by using the stall method and if this is OK you will have to live with it.

All the things above check out O.K. It was replaced with a Borg and Beck. I was able to stall the car in fourth but am having a little trouble getting car into second occassionally. Tom

Let's forget about second just for the moment. Can you select reverse silently from rest ? Depress the clutch, wait about three seconds and it should then select silently.

I am having a difficult time getting it into reverse. Could it be that when I rebuilt the clutch it just dosn't have much life left in it?

What I meant to say was, that when I rebuilt the slave cylinder could it be that it dosn't have much life left in it? There is plenty of travel on the plunger close to an inch if not more. Tom

Maybe that new monster engine ripped it apart already?

Measure how much clutch travel you have at the slave cylinder. One of your girls should be able to push the clutch in for you. Something may be bent or binding - not allowing it to release all the way.

Check to see if it is cured by introducing air into the system. Crack the bleeder for a few seconds and let it leak out some fluid. See what happens and report back?

An inch of travel of the slave push-rod? That is way too much, should only be about 1/2" to 5/8". If it really is an inch or more then it sounds like you have an incorrect combination of slave and master bores i.e. an oversized master or an undersized slave.

If it is engaging right at the top then it could also be slipping if it is not fully engaged i.e. there is not some free movement left in the slave - try it, you should be able to push the slave further back in.
