MG MGB Technical - Oil Filters

I have been reading the archives on the best and worst oil filters to use on my 71 mgb roadster. However, I don't see the Bosch 3402 mentioned in either category. Does anyone know anything about it, plus or minus? Thanks.

Curt; When I checked the book at Auto-zone a few months ago they listed a Bosch 3321 as the correct MGB filter. I bought one to cut open, not to use. You can see it in my Yahoo photos, the first three photos are the Bosch 3321. After cutting it and several others open I would not use one in my car. The filter media is small compared to other filters. Look at photo 20, the smallest element is from the Bosch. It has a decent looking anti-drain-back valve, the metal plate in the lower right corner is the bypass valve, it is supposed to flex it the filter clogs and bypass the oil. I will not seal so the filter is always bypassing some oil and I don't believe it will flex enough to provide adequate lubrication if the filter clogs. I have done no valid performance tests, just general observation. I feel there are better options available. Some examples, Purolator PL 14670, MororCraft FL-300, NAPA 1068, Wix 51068. The numbers I have referenced were looked up in parts books for correct application to fit a 72 MGB.

The K & N HP 2004 and the Mobil 1 M-204 appear to be good filters, but I cannot where they would perform any better than other good filters. They have heavy cans, but when was the last time you have seen a can burst? The nut on the K & N is a nice touch but not worth the added cost to me. Both filters appear to be identical inside.

Thanks, Clifton. That's exactly the kind of information I was looking for. Curt

The '70's era chrysler v8 used the fram 43 filter which fits the late model engines. There are various versions available all of which fit the same spin on adapter. The Volvo version is about 1.5" high, the Chrysler, about 4" - there are other sizes, all of which share the same mounting. The larger size 43 has more filter media and should continue to be effective longer and have less pressure drop than the smaller filters. Obviously if you don't like Fram you can choose brand x or y. I note on the fram Tough Guard filters they don't advertise the first pass filtration efficiency, but instead the multipass efficiency -- while with the cheaper filter they give the first pass ratings. You pay your money and take your choice.
