MG MGB Technical - Non Starter when hot

I have owned my MGB (1975 Chrome bumper) for well over 20 years & re-built it about 8 years ago. It now gets very little use, just sits in the garage. Always starts firstish time (allowing for good turnover to raise oil pressure) even after 3-4 months.

However once the engine is hot it will no longer re-start until left for over half an hour to cool down.

I have thought about fule vapourisation but the heat shield is in good condition & the carbs were replaced a couple of years ago. They are the ones with the float chambers alongside.

I have never had this problem before, fuel pump new, everything else should be in good condition. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

A

I presume it cranks but doesn't fire. A 75 should have HIFs which shouldn't suffer from vapourisation, especially in the UK at the moment. But you seem to have HSs with the exposed jet feed pipes, and these can but only under very extreme conditions (these cars run in desert states in the USA without problems) or a knackered heat shield. Does the ignition warning light glow when you turn on the ignition and crank? Coils can fail when hot (they can get hotter due to heat soak after switch-off than when running), so the first thing to do is clip a timing light onto the coil lead and each plug lead and just check that it flashes when cranking, and approximately at the right time when on plugs 1 and 4. If that is OK then it does look like fuel, but again even if the pump had packed up there should still be enough fuel left in the float chamber to allow it to start at least. But always eliminate the ignition first.
