MG MGB Technical - Noise from the clutch(?) in idle gear

Last Weekend I noticed, that sometimes when I am stopped with my MGB (1977) and the (manual) gear shift is in idle position a clicking noise comes from the engine bay or tranny. This noise disappears when the clutch pedal is at least slightly depressed...
Any Ideas? I have virtually no other trouble with that car's engine or tranny, besides it is leaking a little of any sort of oil.

Thanx

Mark,
Any clicking, whirring, humming type noises in neutral (idle) which vanish when the clutch is lightly -part way- pressed usually indicate a thrust bearing throwout bearing) needing to be replaced.

Do you kow when this was last done? It may help give an idea if a replacement clutch is about due.

Hope this helps, Cheers, Pete, Queensland, Australia.

Mark,
It might just be the sound of your fuel pump being heard whilst other sounds are at their lowest level (engine/road noise etc). I prefer a 'start with the simple possibility' approach so check for this first. Park somewhere safe and have a look up into the floorpan under the right side, approximately adjacent to the battery box on that side. You should see the fuel pump and detect the clicking sound they make. Of course, if this is not the source, could be along the lines Peter mentioned.
Good luck.
