MG MGB Technical - No Dash Lights / No Tail Lights!

I have a great 68 mgb roadster. I love it. I don't drive it as often as I would like. I got it out this afternoon for the first time in about 3 months and was driving into the sunset. As I recall, when I put it away, everything was working just fine.

As the evening got dark, I turned on the lights and everything seemed to be working OK. I did have headlights, and interior lights (at least my cigar lighter was lit -- I couldn't tell for sure if my instrument lights were on). I flipped the switch on the column for the instruments / dash, and I lost my cigar lighter light. I also noticed that I did not have any tail lights. I still have my headlights and turn signal.

So here is the current situation:

These lights are working: Headlights, Brake Lights, Turn Signal Indicator (both inside and outside) High and low beams.

These lights are not working: Taillights, Instrument Panel Lights, Cigar Lighter light.

I checked the fuses (cursory check) and they seemed to be allright,

I would love to avoid a long arduous electrical search. Anybody know what went wrong?

Thanks!

Scott

Scott - Go back and recheck the fuses with a meter. They have a nasty habit of breaking at the ends where you can't see the broken section. Good luck - Dave

These lights not on are fed by the red wires, check Pauls site http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/ it will give you more details, Your front side lights are probably out as well. As the main lights work, and they are fed by the same wire through the switch, I would check that first.

The cigar lighter and instrument lighting doesn't go via the fuses, and it would be unlikely for both sides to fail at the same time. Check the red wire(s) at the main lighting switch and the switch itself, the instrument and the external lights meet here.
