MG MGB Technical - New Mountney hub & wheel assembly won't fit

Because I am 6'1" tall, I must be a contortionist to enter and exit my car, a '69B roadster with removeable factory hard top. And even when I'm situated inside, the 16 1/4" OEM banjo steering wheel rubs against my thighs.

Obviously a replacement steering wheel is in order.

I became enamored with the Mountney 14" semi-dish wheel, painted black with nice thick hand-sewn leather covering. Found them in the VB catalogue and bought one when it was on sale...I have now gone through two sets of these assemblies for my '69B. Why? Because even though I ordered the correct model the first time (states it's for '68-'69 models) the splines inside the hub do not perfectly mesh with the splines on my steering column. When tightened down, there is noticeable, unacceptable play.

As my 'B was manufactured in 9/69, we surmised it might require the assembly for the '70 model. HA! Upon installing it, the splines hardly touch one another at all. The inner diameter of the hub is far too large.

So now they're sending me another '68-'69 assembly just in case the first was a one-off.

I'm certain my steering column splines are good, as are the splines inside the hub of my OEM steering wheel, for they mate perfectly with absolutely no wiggle.

Suggestions? Other than bonding the new wheel to the steering column with a metal epoxy?

I had the same problem with the 14" Mountney wheel hub on my 69 C, although I sourced the wheel through Mini Mania. The first hub was obviously wrong and another was sent, fitting properly. I think that there was a transition point between two different steering columns and the 69's were caught in the middle of it. Let me know if you want the info from the box the hub came in and I will dig it out. I do remember that it had 'Special' stamped on it.

Thx, Paul. Will do, if the new hub en route doesn't fit.
