MG MGB Technical - New Generator Quality ? (India)
Hi , my generator's drive end bearing is beginning to go , I was considering one of those made in India brand new generators Moss and Bap Geon sells - anyone here have any experience good or bad ? I bought one last year for my A-55 but gave it to my buddy as it turned out to be a regulator problem . Also , Moss wants $80.00 , anyone know where to get a better price ? -Nate

My suggestion would be to find a good OLD rebuilder and let him go through your generator. They'll replace both the bearings, clean up the commutator, install new brushes and usually paint the case for about $50.00.

Why not just fit a new bearing? it will cost a lot less than even $50 and is not difficult to do.

Well , I did rebuild the generator in my A-55 (even found a N.O.S.Lucas 'sundries kit'!) and it seemed O.K. for 20,000 miles but I'd rather just swap it out , I'm beginning to think I should just replace the bearing as I can get sealed bearings to replace the old open one . NO rebuilder in L.A. will touch it for under $100.00 and they;ll just do a quickie job , I don't want that . I was hoping someone would know of a Bap Geon parts house that will sell wholesale . -Nate

Have sold several of the new generators and a couple of the new Italian Lucas alternators and have been pleased. Bob Thompson

Well Bob , you should have included price info and i would have ordered one but last night the $#@! thing seized in South Central Los Angeles so I had to send it to my rebuilder this morning , it'll be fine but I'd have rather bought a brand new one . Thanx for the good replys guys . -Nate

Whatever you decide to do, keep it oiled. Mine went out in Virginia Beach and couldn't find one anywhere. Off to ADVANCE and bought some SPRAY LITIUM GREASE and it got me back home with the brass bushing completly gone, a 225 mile trip. Now, every three months or so, I shoot a little in the end oil hole and have had no problems. I just don't think the occasional drop of oil is enough. Steve

Yabbut ; the commutator end bushing is fine , I oil it every oil change whilst the damned filter is out of the way , it was the drive end ballbearing that blew . I should have it back , all pretty & re-newed by thursday . -Nate
