MG MGB Technical - Mk 1 Turn Signal Switch Connections

Recently picked up one of the early turn signal switches with the optional high beam 'flasher' built into the switch for the '65. Currently, the car has a worn original turn signal switch with the high beam switch located on the firewall near the clutch pedal.

Couple questions:

1) Wires on the new switch match up perfectly with the old (including a black ground wire with bullet connector), except that the new switch has what I believe to be an additional ground wire, which ends in a metal circle clip- just like the grounding wire for the rear lights, etc. that bolts to the inner trunk body using the license plate bolt. Does anyone have a picture of the switch install or could tell me where the second ground wire should fasten?

2) I assume that I can leave the floor dimmer switch in place without modification and that high beams can now be flashed from the floor switch AND the stalk, as appropriate. Anyone believe otherwise?

Thanks!

Mathew - I don't know about the ring terminal for the ground connection, it should go to any convienent bolt that will provide a good solid ground.

Regarding the new, high beam switch, it is only for flashing the high beams when passing or such. It does not actually switch the headlights from low to high beams and back. Since I don't really have a use for flashing high beams, I used that switch in parallel with the wiper switch so I can flick the wipers on for a single swipe without using the rather expensive wiper switch. I find it very handy for that application. Cheers - Dave

make sure your column cowl is the one with the cut out then you can usethe high beam by pushing forward so the little slot needs to be there or it wont go far enough forward

Great tips guys, thanks. I guess I can use that ring terminal with one of the screws that holds the switch to the column, the wire itself would not be long enough for anything else and there are only those two attachment bolts for the switch itself in the area of the column.

That is actually a great use for the flasher Dave. I'm not sure how I would wire it in parallel with the wiper switch; the remainder of the wires fit perfectly into the wiring harness. I did rewire the car last winter, but it was a stock harness and I just followed the wiring diagram. I did not deviate at all from stock and do not entirely trust my abilities to do so. I may ask my dad, he had to make up a few new connections for the TR-3 not provided for in the stock loom.

You read my mind. Can you provide how you wired that?

I would love to be able to do a quick sweep with a flick of the turn signal stalk. Hate reaching to the dash to turn the wipers on and then off again.

If you have MkI roadster single speed wipers just wire the headlamp flasher wires across the wiper switch wires i.e. brown to black and blue/white to black green.

But if you have a GT or 2-speed wipers it can get very complicated as there are three different motors with two different electrical arrangements.
