MG MGB Technical - MGB Potential

i have a 68 mgb roadster with no engine in it and a mazda 20b 3rotor engine jus sitting around in running condition due to a wreck i got into with my converted 1995 3rd gen 3rotor conversion. the engine was dynoed at 675 hp and looks like it could fit with just a few modifications. has anyone ever put that much power behind a MGB before? has anyoned ever done this exact conversion? potential what type of speed and modifications would have to be done to make my MG SAFETY FAST? and if not exactly safe then what would need to be done to get the most out of it

Is this the motor you are talkin' about?

The only comments I've heard are that the engine is too wide. If you look at the front frame rails they are closer together between the front wheels. Modifying the uni body is not simple project.

In my opinion, its one of those "if you gotta ask, you probably can't" questions. If you designed the engine upgrades and suspension mods to handle the engine you describe, overcoming the obstacles to installing it in an MG should pose no problems. Converseley, if you have the money to have paid someone to built you that engine, you should be able to afford the talents of the same person to install the engine. I expect he/she would have no problems.

If your engine is worth anything, I would sell it and buy a good 302 for the conversion. The 302 conversion is well documented and will get the car on the road in your lifetime. It would also be much more saleable when the time comes.

yeah thats the same type of engine im talking about it looks like a fun project to conquer i did the rx7 conversion myself i just had to buy the engine from japan i kinda like the idea of a 600+hp MGB has anyone ever done it?
joe

You have a 675HP rotary? Come on now, that's more than the factory gets for their race cars!
And this power in an MGB? What are you, nuts?
Terry

sorry actually 673hp its race ported with twin turbos
you have to remember that its a 3 rotor not a 2rotor. and yeah some people may have called me that i want the most power possible then i wanna set it up for the race/mg enthusist car show in buttonwillow california next year

Your best bet would be to look over in the V8 conversions forum. There are some guys there who have got some fairly serious power under the hood, although I don't know if any have gone over 500bhp.
dave

Rotary conversions have certainly been done, but I seriously doubt the rest of the drivetrain would be up to the task of handling that much power. You'd be looking at replacing everything between the radiator and the rear wheels, inclusive. And once you've done that, there's still the problem of getting the power to the ground. You're either going to smoke the clutch or smoke the tires trying to launch it! ;-)

On the plus side, check out this video of a Toyota Corrola fitted with a 600hp 20b...

It's the white car. When it accelerates away, both cars were doing 70.

Nice.
dave

Man, love that clip. Those guys are having fun!
vem myers

that was bad ass now imagine that with a classic MG
joe

That would be pretty cool. I'm guessing you'd need to use the whole of the RX-7 driveline (if it's still servicable) To handle the torque. Also you would probably want to look at beefing up the body to take the power. I've seen 'Bs with ladder chassis welded to the bottom, but I think it would be more fun to try and keep it unibody, possibly with a fat roll cage.

You'll probably want to go for one of the V8 crossmember based front suspension conversions as well. That will give you some more room in the engine bay, as well as better adjustability with the suspension settings. Those conversion kits can be had with big brakes, which I guess you'll be wanting...:)
dave

yeah big brakes might be nice lol i dont think the stock ones will exactly stop that easily

Man, I clearly need more turbochargers.

600 horses in a 'B would be pretty boss... but a GT might be a smarter move?
