MG MGB Technical - MGB ENGINE COLOUR

Hello,

thinking about repainting my mgb engine, however I have read a few articles and it seems the paint colour changed from maroon to black around the time of my car so unsure which it should be. Can anyone help?

It is a mgb roadster 1971
Engine no 18GG-RWE-H/26557
Date of build 21-24th May 1971

Many thanks
Alex Davies

Hi Alex,

There must still be original painting traces on your engine, generally 18G* are maroon painted, colour change to black happened with 18V engine.

Thank you, Alex for raising this question for it has bothered me for a long time. My 71GT was built 11th June 71,eng No 18GG-RWE-H/27534 and it is painted black. When, some years ago, I stripped the block for a rebuild, I could not find the slightest trace, as Guy sugests, of red in the pores of the castings. This only becomes a problem at a Concourse where the judges mark me very low under bonnet because my engine "should be red"! It seems obvious to me that if the Company ran out of red paint some months before the changover to black on the 18V engines, then they were not going to purchase a small [to them]quantity of red paint at a premium price to finish the run. I have an E-mail dated 21/05/2009 from Don Hayter where he says there is a distinct possibility that the black painted engines change point was varied, we got both for a time. Do what Guy says, otherwise, paint it red and you'll please the junges!! Owen
