MG MGB Technical - MGB car number?

Hi all,

I am just about to stamp a replacement "Car no." plate to replace my damaged one.

The plate is badly damaged and some of the numbers are hard to read so i looked at the logbook - the number is GHN4 181***G
Quick question hopefully someone can answer.
Does anyone know what the G stands for at the end as i can find no reference for it?
The car is a 69 Roadster
thanks

Hi Steve,
The last 'G' indicates no more than your car was built at Abingdon. According to Clausager the letter was added to all car numbers from 1967. Also from Clausager, the G is often recorded as a 6 at the DVLA.

On my midget a 72 the no on the log book/V5 ends in a G but on the plate there is no G. This caused problems at the MOT this week because without the G the computer couldn't find the car. When we used the V5 number it worked.

Steve,

I've had problems with that "G" here in Kentucky when it was on the car but not the title, or when it was on the title but not the car.

I bought the Clausager book to demonstrate its meaning to the DMV. The woman I talked to at the main headquarters was happy to have the information for her files, so I photocopied all of the VIN number related pages and gave them to her. It was nice to find someone at the DMV who wanted the straight story instead of someone with tunnel vision.
