MG MGB Technical - mechanical fuel pump

hi everyone.
can you change the electric fuel pump for the mechanical type.what are the +s and -s. on 1800 b.
thanks bob.

As long as there is a lobe for the pump on the camshaft, one should be able to use a mechanical pump. The only plus in using a mechanical pump that I can see is that it doesn't make any ticking as the electric pump does. On the minus side is the greater possibility of vapor lock since the fuel entering the higher temperature of the engine compartment is under lower than atmospheric pressure and is thus more apt to vaporize. The ideal position for a fuel pump is close to and slightly lower than the fuel tank as on the early MGBs Cheers - Dave

How will you drive it? 1500 midgets have a mechanical pump-bolted to the block with a lever that is driven by the cam (I think)

Why replace the electric one? M

Did you mean - change an "electronic" no points fuel pump for the "mechanical" but still electric - points type pump?

There may be a blank on the block, but I don't think there is space to fit a pump.

hi
there is a blanking plate on the block and when you take it off you can see the camshaft with the offset journal. i know i can fit one on but will it work ok. ie fuel pressure etc.
Bob Taylor

Bob,

Certainly it will work as mechanical pump deliver 3 lbs like electical one.

The old Austin 1800 had a mechanical fuel pump It was driven by a lob on the end of the cam shaft The 1800 block is very much the samre as an MGB
