MG MGB Technical - Lowering MGB GT Jubilee

Gents, I've started the process of lowering my MGB GT Jubilee (#730).

A couple of question;
as i got a shorter front spring, why is it that the new link arm is longer than the original?
Shouldn't the linkarm been shorter as well?

And the swivel arm; how do I dismatle it?
I've removed the nut on one end, and thought I then could pull or screw the top trunnion loos, but no...
How do I lossen/split it?

Hi Bjrn, have just lowered my 77 mgb roadster...the link arms were the same on mine - the drop-link arms you show in the pic are different from each other in both length and design - front and rear?

Re: what do you mean by swivel arm?

I eventually found out, when starting to work on the rear suspension, that the new linkarm is for the rear suspension, som that question need no more answers :-/

The swivel, on the other hand..
Is the axle withthe top- and bottom trunnions, which holds the hub.

But; I've solved this issue as well, a couple of strokes with a rubber hammer fixed it.

Now I need to cleen in, and re-fit the suspension.

Yes, the rubber hammer will do it. I did that too! One thing I did find out was that there are round cups bolted to the cross-memember at the front where the springs fit upwards - did not see these at first!! But you probably know this.

Front suspension finished now, rear axle is taken out and cleand - will split it and fit new shims an bushings to the diff today. Or tomorrow. Or...

Looks very nice Bjorn,Out of interest, the King pin arrangement; I am about to replace my swivel axles with recon ones any difficulties or points to watch? All is pre-assembled in the recon unit looks ok but I have no king pin bolt do I order a new one or use the old one ( does not make sense? ) Mike

Do you mean a complete swivel axle including hub and king-pin complete already assembled?

They are just bolt up, if you managed to remove your upper and lower trunnion bolts, and there is no play in the lower, then the old ones can go back. But the lower kit is best replaced if the original is of an unknown age, and the upper pin often has to be cut through to remove the swivel axle assembly from the damper arms. At the very least you should replace the upper bushes. The lower pin can wear an oval in the outer ends of the A-arms, and grooves in the pin, if it wasn't correctly tightened. Then there are the bushes in the inner ends of the A-arms on the pivot.

If the swivel axle and king-pin are separate are the former has been rebushed then they usually need line-reaming to the correct size and alignment, as well as all the above.

Then there are the track-rod ends ..., dampers ...
