MG MGB Technical - Leaky Banjo

'ello all,
I have a '79b that periodically piddles in the garage. The fuel pump leaks from either, or sometimes both, banjo bolts. I had the pump replaced a few years ago and I believe these bolts are from the old pump. Anyway, I crank them down and there's no leak for a couple of weeks.
I intend to replace; (2) fiber washers, (2) o-rings but should I also consider the bolts and the banjo unions? They appear in good condition. These are Moss SU parts 46 thru 49.
A good fathers day is spent under an MG, with parts from a gift certificate, and two assistants under 3 feet tall!
Thanks in advance,
Brady

Hi Brady.

I would check with a straight edge for damage or distortion to all of the faces between and including the bottom of the bolts and the top of the pump.

Maybe the banjos were damaged by over-tightening at some point in the past.

It would stak a tremdous amount of torque to damage the banjo fittings, I would expct that the treads woud be ripped out of the fuel pump before sufficient pressure to damage the fittings woud be generated. Look at the flat side of the fittings and make sure that there are no gouges or ridges on them. If there are any imperfections, lap them out on a piece of 400 grit sand paper on a flat pice of steel or plate glass. The fiber washer shoud be installed in the recessed side of the banjo fitting and the shoulder of the bolt goes against that washer. Use an 'O' ring onthe other side of the fittng ONLY if the ports on the pump are recessed to accept them. If the ports on the pump are flat, then a fiber washer should also be used between them and the flat side of the banjo fitting. If 'O' rings are used where washers belong or wahsers are used where 'O' rings belong, leaks will always occure. The pump bodies were changed fairly recently to accept 'O' rings. If you have questions about this arrangement, e-mail me and I'll send you some pictures. Cheers - Dave
