MG MGB Technical - K&Ns and removed front silencer - Happy
Just wanted to say that I endorse the move to K&Ns and have also removed the front silencer on my 71 B. It seems to respond much better and it sounds very sporty - not too loud at all. I hated to see that comparison report in which K&N did so poorly. I have fairly large K&Ns fitted in addition to the trumpets - air flow seems much more even and easy. These steps were mentioned in Steve S's tech piece. I will replace the distributor springs to correct some weakness there and my hope is all will be well, Jeff |

Theory is that the fine strands of oil-soaked cotton vibrate due to the pulsing flow generated by the engine. This vibration sweeps the air and the minute particles are picked up by the oil-laden strands and are subsequently held in place. Strong supporting evidence comes from the results of SAE/ISO dust tests. During such tests a K&N element rarely shows more than about 98% dust filtration efficiency. However, in use on an engine under desert conditions it is clearly far superior to a paper element, which may have shown 99% efficiency on such a test. Official industry dust tests are conducted under STEADY flow conditions rather than the pulsing flow seen in an engine. Use of K&Ns can show up in used oil anaylsis, but may be more to other factors rather such as maintenance and fitting rather than the filtering aspect. |
