MG MGB Technical - K&N AIR FILTER

My 79 MGB came equipped with a Weber downdraft carbuetor. Sitting atop of the Weber is a K&N air filter. It is approx 1+ inches in height and rectagnal with rounded corners. My questions are,

what is the proper way to clean this filter?

OR

should I replace it? and with what?

cheers

K&N has a cleaning kit for their carbs that you should be able to pick up at pretty much any auto parts store. Basically, you spritz on a bunch of cleaning solution (it's caustic, so don't spritz yourself), let it sit for 10 minutes or so, then rinse with tap water. After the filter dries, reapply filter oil and you're in business again.

Hi Gary,

I just cleaned my daily driver's K&N yesterday, it helps to have a warm day to dry the cotton filter, or a lot of time if it is in a cool garage. It is a good idea to get a cheap paint brush to brush out the larger particles and bugs, then apply the K&N Cleaner. It is now available at most stores that sell the filters, or on-line. Don't use a hair drier to speed up the drying process. Don't think I will be going up to Hildeen this summer, I will do a show in the Boston area in late June.

First, the K&Ns only need cleaning every 60,000 miles - the dirtier they are, the better they work.

Second, the cleaning solution is put in a shallow tray so it is about 1/4 inch deep and the dirty filter is gently agitated in the bath with the dirty side down and the solution is not allowed to wash over from the inside of the filter.
