MG MGB Technical - I can see the light!!

.....but i can't get the bloomin things off!!

I'm trying to remove the headlights and side/indicator lights on my mk2 BGT so i can replace all the gaskets/sealing rubbers because they have perished.

An easy enough job i thought. Start with the side lights first. Easy to unsrew everything and then when trying to disconnect the wires - blimey can't reach them. Garage was too cramped to slide underneath and with the battery disconnected, couldn't start it to drive it out!

off with the headlights - perhaps will be easier? Off comes the crome ring, twist the lamp clockwise, slides off but seems stuck so i slip a finger behind and twang - the spring snaps! ok so how about disconnecting these wires - stuck solid!!

now for the questions - what does the spring on the back of the headlight do? is it vital and need replacing?

how on earth do you disconnect the wires. I can't get the blue protectors? off. Do the wires push into here or are they soldered? no amount of pinching with pliers or jiggling will budge them

any help appreciated
M

The wires from the lamps connect to the loom behind the grill, so you shouldn't have to grovel underneath anyway. They use bullet connectors that just pull out and push in, but can get corroded. When reassembling clean them and coat with Vaseline first.

For the headlights remove the three screws that hold the inner chrome ring to the back-plate. That allows you to pull the lamp forward and pull off the three-pin connector. Then you can unhook the spring and remove the back-plate, or just remove the bowl from the wing. The spring pulls the headlamp into the position set by the alignment screws. Without it the headlamp will rattle and flop about, sending the beam in all directions.

Thanks paul

looks like i'm gonna have fun locating a new spring then!

so i disconnect the wires etc from under the bonnet and pass them trough the hole?

there are some connectors behind the lights though but i couldn't get them off. are these the bullet connectors?
M

Yes and no. Yes you unplug the bullet connectors and pass them through the hole in the wing. No, the bullet connectors are behind the grill under the bonnet slam panel at each end.
