MG MGB Technical - Horn Problems

Last week I pulled my steering wheel off to center it. After putting it back together I found that when I turned the wheel the horn would honk. After checking I saw that the metal piece that touches the back of the steering wheel hub was bent and was brushing against the turn signal cancel knub when the wheel was turned. I bent it awat for the time being. I looked at it today and found that any metal that touches this metal piece makes the horn honk (I know its supposed to as it grounds the horn circuit). Even if I touch it againstthe steering wheel hub it makes the horn honk. Was there something that insulated this that may have come off with the steering column or what?

That contact should only touch the ring on the back of the wheel, as that is supposed to only be grounded when the centre push is pushed. If the horn is sounding when that spring touches the wheel ring then the switch inside the wheel is shorting out. On my cars that is two brass rods in a plastic tube separated by a spring and an air-gap. Operating the horn push closes up that gap and makes the circuit.

Thanks Paul...it sounds even if the horn push piece is removed.
