MG MGB Technical - Hmmm...Missing fuel pickup ?

Hello All,

I just picked up a 2nd hand fuel tank (later type), it was new from the MGOC in 2001 and has all the bits and bobs and has never been fitted.

However - there is no fuel pickup/outlet anywhere on the tank. Just the fuel filler and sender holes.

I was expecting to find the pickup/outlet next to the sender hole - but there is most certainly nothing there - not even a hole.

What are my options ? I can't find a pick-up assembly from MOSS, can I cannibalise another car?

Why would MGOC supply a tank without one in the first place?

From Aug 76 tanks had a combined sender and outlet. Short of exchanging the tank (unlikely after 4 years) you might be able to use the later sender 11H 5062. But there were pipe differences between those and the earlier rubber bumper cars, and bigger differences to chrome bumper cars because of the different location of the pump.

I have carte blanch when it comes to this car - empty late CB shell and all new fuel items. Plus its all nice and clean, and easy see whats going on.

I will get the combined sender and pick up and see where I go from there. I'm keeping the pump in the normal CB location having been warned about gravity feed issues.

If its just a pipe issue then even if I need a sender to pump pipe made up especially it wont be too onerous.

As long as the sender unit fits the tank, I can work around everything else!

Liam. The late model tanks had a hole for the fuel filler on top and, just behind it, a fitting to attach the line to the vapor seperator. That should be capped off if you are using a filler neck with a vented cap.

As Paul notes, the later style tank used a one piece fuel pick up tube with an integral sending unit. On that system, the fuel pump was mounted into the rear of the trunk with a rubber ring and clamp to hold it in place. A small box, enclosed on four sides (top, rear, left and right) and open on the bottom was held in place by two screws and provided protection to the pump.

Thanks Lee,

Its a 1974 CB, so I am planning to use the later style tank, chrome bumper mounting location for fuel pump, and it seems now, an integral sender/pickup.

Is there anything wrong with that combination?

How can I tell if I have a vented filler cap? I have a stainless steel one from a later CB and a plastic one from a 78 RB. There is nothing on the tank but the filler and sender holes.

For obvious reasons I don't want to get the fuel system wrong, hence I am replacing all components with new.

Sorry, meant Les not Lee!

Early start with the baby this morning! Brain not working.

UK tanks never had the additional vent that eventually went to the charcoal canister, and always had a vented fuel filler cap. Having said that the only way to tell if you have a vented cap is by rigging something up to see if you can suck air through it. It should have a spring-loaded valve which stopes fuel leaking out in a roll-over, and so needs slight suction before it will open. Short of a test rig, just drive it! If it is a non-vented cap after a few miles it will splutter and come to a halt, and removing the filler cap will result in a big 'whoosh' of air going in, and you will be able to start and drive off again. Note that with the spring-loaded valve even vented filler caps may develop a small 'whoosh'.

Having worked on both types of pump the higher position of the rubber bumper pump allows you to change it with no leakage of fuel, unlike the chrome bumper pump. However having had to change the chrome bumper pump while on a trip the aforementioned small vacuum was enough to stop fuel leaking out.
