MG MGB Technical - Heavy steering
| Has anyone had any experience of the roller bearing type washer that can be fitted to the king pin to supposedly lighten the steering a little. At 84 and still enjoying driving the MG I’m finding it’s getting more of an effort to drive. I know power steering can be fitted but don’t really want to go down that route. If roller bearing is a possible help where would these be available. Thanks |

| I honestly don't think it would help much. With the wheels off the ground you should be able to spin the steering wheel from lock to lock with a finger-tip and at anything above 20mph should still be quite light. At parking speeds the load comes from the tyre patch and is why power steering has been made available.
Another option marketed is castor wedges, but again I don't think they help much with parking but they reduce self-centring. Under-sized after-market steering wheels make it worse. However I fitted an after-market wheel to a pal's 79 which is smaller than the original, which was smaller than the pre-77 wheel. I was expecting the steering to be really heavy but was surprised just how light it was, because the 77 and later steering rack has a different ratio which needs more turns lock to lock i.e. lighter steering. As far as I'm aware those racks will fit earlier rubber bumper cars, but not chrome. |
