MG MGB Technical - Gas Analyzer

Contrary to majority opinion, I've been using the gunson Gastester for about 3 unfretful years, with the K&N O2 sensor for onboard driving monitoring. Anyone know of something between the Gunson cheapo ( $200) and a full on Sun Analyzer ( $4000) that a med size garage could use for the mix?

My Gunsons is not very good. I have trouble calibrating it to 2% and it is about 2.5% pessimistic, but at least it gives me a guide so as to get the V8 through the MOT each year.

Sometimes the older gas analyzers can be bought s/hand. Try a wholeseller who has lots of medium sized customers. I was told the Gunsons was for hobby use (so my type of thing), but not really accurate.

Vem. Used emissions testing equipment, in areas which require emissions testing, is expensive. Start up shops are looking for it for primary use and established shops are looking for back ups. New one fellow who hired a new mechanic. Mechanic set the emissions on a car, climbs in the running car and backs out of the shop. Forgot to unhook the emissions test equipment, a $7K mistake.

Local high schools or community colleges often have automotive training programs. Sometimes is it possible to purchase their used, but still working, equipment when they get new.

I have used the Gunson's CO meter for many years now. The advantage is that it is available at a price the serious hobbyist can afford. The disadvantage is they do not hold up very well (wife knocked first meter off a small stool--new meter required, current meter had the upright diaphram holder, held on with double sided sticky tape, fall off the first time it was used--will not hold up in Arizona Summers), and they are wildly inaccurate (as Paul H mentions--but the readings my meter gives do not even bear a passing resembance to what the emissions testing stations are showing) and there is no way to accurately calibrate them (you set the scale to 2.0% "in the air"--would that not require one to know exactly how much CO was in the local air to allow accurate alignment of the scale?). The best that can be said of this meter is that it is better than nothing. I am not, however, convinced that it can be used to provide accurate, or even repeatable, test results. Les
