MG MGB Technical - Fuel tank differences?

Hi everyone,

I bought a gas tank from Proper MG last summer for my '69 MGB-GT and installed it in the fall. The fuel filler pipe didnot line up for some reason with the tank spout. I called Proper MG thinking maybe they sent the wrong tank. No satisfaction there. I took the filler pipe to a muffler shop to see if he could take some of the bend out of it. He tried but caved the top in and still did not take enough of the bend out (I think this guy could tear up a steel ball with a rubber hammer). Well, I had to install it anyway as I did not have another filler pipe. Now I am getting H2O in the trunk during rains because the new seal is not pulled up against the body good. Is there a difference in the angle on the tank spouts? Does any other model have a filler pipe that doesn't have as much of a bend in it as a '69 GT? Mine vents through the cap. Thanks in advance!

I have a 73 and there is a good inch gap in the fuel tank/filler pipe with a large rubber pipe between the two. It must be pretty bad if this cannot compensate.

John,

It is bad. Mine has an inch or so at the rubber conector also. Thats why I can't understand it unless there was some point in which the angle changed on the tank. I guess its possible the pipe was welded on the tank wrong but I've painted the tank now and have been using it so I guess theres nothing I can do about a replacement. Maybe I can find another filler pipe and get a pipe fitter to take some of the bend out.

Paul,
I know of at least 2 different types of filler necks. I changed my 76 to an earlier non baffled tank and had to change filler necks. The 76 used an L shaped hose to go from the straight filler to the tank, the earlier tank used straight hose and a bent filler.
Does the outlet for the tank point up or up at an angle ? The one that points up requires the L shaped hose and the straight neck.

Go to ebay and do a search for MGB filler. There is a 62-69 filler neck with a mild bend for auction now, but others show up all the time. Eventually the one you need will show up.

Thanks for responding Carl. So the spout out of the tank is either straight up or at an angle, right? There apparently aren't any different degrees of angles. That's what I needed to know. I'll just look for another filler spout for my model and go from there. I just can't understand why mine is so far out of whack. Thanks again!

Paul, According to the Moss catalog there were two filler necks from 1962 to 1975. From 62-69 the neck had internal lugs and used a non vented cap. From 70-75 the neck had external lugs for a non vented cap. I have a 68 GT and a 74 roadster, both necks have the same angle and the spout from the tank on both cars is at an angle. Also have a used gas tank from the 74 and the spout on it is at an angle. I have tried the early filler neck in the 74 and it fits fine. Seems there was a thread some time back on this subject, I don't recal all the details but I think it was determined the tank was not correct.

I have a midget filler neck that has a lesser bend than the B neck. It is longer than the B neck but the bend appears to be in the same location. It has internal lugs for for a vented cap. It could be cut to the proper length. If you would like to try it email me off list. BTW I live in Asheboro.

I bought that same tank from Proper MG last year (my car is a '74 but I used your type because it holds about two gallons more -- in a gas-hogging V8 that's kind of handy) and it fits just fine, with either the early type internally-eared filler pipe or the later externally-eared filler pipe. Something's gotta be out of whack. That being said, no way this is the end of the world. If worst comes to worse, one supposes you could write a letter to the Pope and just cut off the filler pipe and use a longer flexible hose.
