MG MGB Technical - Fuel pumps

Anyone had problems with new pumps? The Kiwi Ecco I have just fitted, produces a trickle of fuel only. I have used them for ages and found them much more reliable than the OE SU but this one has me wondering. Obviously my first thoughts were air leaks on the uptake side but I can't find any.

The Ecco looks identical to the one that came to me on the V8, also referred to as a Moprod. That was fine for a while, then started short-stroking and causing gross fuel starvation. Even though the cars is an RB i.e. the electrics end is in the boot, and I managed to get the cover off while it was doing its thing, I couldn't see anything wrong and nothing I did made any difference (other than stopping it altogether), I just had to wait until it decided to start pumping properly before I could get on my way again. After two or three bouts of that I replaced it with one I had taken off my roadster when the points started sticking, and had cleaned and reset them, and I've have had no more problems since.

Yours sounds like it is doing all the time what mine did occasionally.

The other problem with those pumps is that they are plastic bodied, and it is not difficult to crack the body through over-tightening of the unions.

Dave - interesting article - thanks. Paul - they do seem to become *intermittent* with age (who doesn't) but thanks to Dave, I have fingered the pickup inside the stainless tank - can't explain why but the rest of the recent story recalls there were no probs with the old pump until the level went below 1/4. It's worth recalling also that I was plagued by leaks in the early days until I found petro patch. New tank on the way - interesting talk with Malcolm (B&G) about the return line from the injection.

Who says MGs arn't interesting !!

Roger - "interesting talk with Malcolm (B&G) about the return line from the injection."

Since the MGBs didn't come with fuel injection, I would be interested in what Malcom has to say regarding that. Cheers - Dave

Dave - I had bored a hole in the stainless tank for the return line and was prepared to do the same to the new heritage tank but agreed to use the sender for the fuel guage which also has a fuel take up. The last but one OE tank already has a take up pipe so I end up with two. We discussed the RV8 tank but agreed it is too complicated. I had to pump out the last three gallons from the old tank - the the experience has lessons for all and I have started a new thread
Good wishes,
