MG MGB Technical - Fuel Pump Replacement

Hi, I am needing to replace the fuel pump in my 79B. The price of the AUF 300 seems to be astronomical. $460.00 NZ approx. Can anyone suggest a good after market replacement.

I have used the plastic Moprod electric pumps on all my 'B's for years and never had one fail. Just don't over tighten the fittings as you could crack it. They are a direct replacement for the SU so no mods required.
They sell for about £37 over hear and are always advertised on Ebay.

Tom,
I've recently bought a NZ-made electronic pump as a backup for my Magnette. Came highly recommended by the supplier, and is quiet - unlike the Facet pump in my MGB.
Price was around A$90 - I'll get the details for you tomorrow.

I used a pump from an '82 subaru until I put the fuel injected V8 in. Worked well and sounded the same. I stuffed it into that dead space at the rear, sides and back of the engine compartment, with some foam rubber wrapped around it. A quick fix that stayed. You don;t even have to remove the old SU pump if you don't want to. The new pump will pull through it. The Honda civic pump is also good. Actually I suspect any low pressure diaphragm pump will do. You will need a pressure regulator it you get a higher pressure pump.
You can tell if it too high a pressure, the carbies will overflow.

Tom,
The NZ pump is a Fuel Flo model 015.

My V8 came to me with a plastic Moprod which was pointless. Worked fine for a while then started short-stroking and causing fuel starvation. When this happens there is nothing you can do, unlike points pumps, except wait until it starts working properly again or replace it. After the second or 3rd bout of this I replaced it with a refurbished points type original I had taken off my roadster when its points started playing up. The only thing you can say about the Moprod apart from its price is that at least the fittings and mounting is the same as the original SU, some after-market pumps need one or both of these to be mangled during installation.

Thanks for your advice. As luck would have it I ended up being given a pump from one of our Team Waikato MG Club members. Happy to report that my car is once again racing around.

John Twist at University Motors Limited has a short U-tube video on fixing fuel pumps. Dirty and pitted contacts are a likely problem. John explains how to dismantle, fix and reassemble the pump. I had replaced my pump on my 77B a couple of years ago and kept the old one. Last week i saw Johns video and worked on my old pump. Now i have a working spare. Check it out.
