MG MGB Technical - Fuel Pump replacement

My fuel pump is dying (weak tick-tick upon startup plus it's missing at highway speeds). I am faced with either replacing the points, or replacing the entire pump.

Do you recommend the OEM pump or have any of you had success with a solid-state replacement?

I bought a Walbro pump from JC Whitney, since I m not really concerned about originality. Costs about half of what an SU does and hasn't missed a beat since I bought it, years ago. It's not noisy like the Facet pumps, just goes tick like an SU. If originality is important, than stick with the SU. BTW, cleaning up the points is not a big deal...might be all you need.

On basis that OEM can last 25-30yrs and once on verge of packing up can usually get you home with a tap with hard object, on balance OEM.

Frank, my fuel pump packed up on my 79. I bought the electronic replacement. It retro-fits perfectly, just as the original. You would not know the difference at all. The only thing is won't have to be concerned about points failing again.

cheers

I'm not enthusiastic about SU fuel pumps, as one or two people already know. Put in a japanese one. I used one from a 82 subaru I happened to have and it went great.

When I replaced my pump, I wasn't concerned about originality. I went down to the local auto parts store and asked what they had for a generic fuel pump with 2 psi max pressure. They're not hard to come by.

My '67 started having the same symptoms (gosh, 15 years ago???) and I was able to get it "unstuck" at highway speed by quickly turning the ignition off then on again, sometimes two or three times. Got me home, at least (middle of nowhere Idaho at night,I was relieved it lasted the 350 miles I needed it to). Next day I pulled it out and cleaned up the points. That lasted a few months until the same symptoms showed up so I got new points. Never had it open since. Even turned it into an autocross racer.

Thanks Mike! I'll try the less expensive route and order some points today from Moss.
