MG MGB Technical - fuel pump pipes

Last week I took off the fuel pump to replace the leaking braided pipes. I cleaned and adjusted the pump points while it was off the car and then refitted it. It wouldn't start... the pump just kept chattering away to itself. Off came the pump to adjust the points and the rod to the diaphragm. Still the same. This kept me going every night this week. I even started looking locally for a new pump. Earlier this evening I had a bright idea and swapped the fuel pump in and out pipes around.... DOH!

Could you hear the bubbles blowing in the fuel tank?
Jeff Schlemmer

Nope, the cd player was turned up too loud. I had suspected the pipes earlier, so I disconnected the fuel pipe at the filter by the engine with the ignition turned on. The line was pressurised even with the pipes reversed... must push fuel up on the downstroke. Confused me totally. I even had the carbs apart to see why the pump wasn't slowing down!

Nick - Good find, glad you didn't junk the pump before you found out that they don't pump backward worth beans.

Jeff - I'm not sure that any air ever got pumped into the tank. More likely it just got pushed up the fuel line and then on the back stroke, it leaked past the check valves (they will stop fuel, not air).
Cheers - Dave
