MG MGB Technical - fuel pump failure

Have 79b w/overdrive.Went out to start car a few days ago and didn't hear that familar ticking noise. Checked connections on fuel pump , connections to ground at license plate . all good. Inertia switch under dash still depressed had not popped up. I think it is the original pump so bought I bought solid state fuel pump from Moss. Installed that one still no ticking and no fuel getting to carb. Questions, is it possible that pump from moss is defective, and is there any way to test it. Also is there any other connections I should be looking at. Thanks for the help, the weather is finally getting nice and i want to get on the road.

The easiest way to test a fuel pump outside the car would be to of course hook it up to an esternal power source. I would hook the pump up to a 12 volt battery charger and give it about 2 amps. This will tell you if it is working or not. I would also check the origional pump. Was it one of those breaker point SU pumps? it is possible that the points need cleaning. Check your power leads going to the pump also, use a 12 volt light bulb or voltmeter and see if you can get the light to light up or what type of reading you get on the voltmeter. Good luck

I installed one of the solid state S.U.'s from Moss recently with no problems. It ticks but not as loud as original points type did but you can still hear it easily. In fact on a drive a week ago, the car stopped and when I noticed I couldn't hear the ticking I jacked up car to find the hot wire loose. Do you have it wired correctly? Hot wire (mine was white down there) to connector on bottom of pump and ground on connection located in the middle of the pump. I'm sure you do but worth checking. I didn't realize that the ground in the trunk was the one for the fuel pump. Useful info.

Of course, if both the old and the new pump fail to work when connected to the car, maybe it is just a wiring connection. And NEVER take one step towards replacing a pump without testing it on the bench first.
