MG MGB Technical - Fuel Pump - Constant Ticking

I had a few problems with a sticky HS4 float valve a few weeks back, which thanks to BBS help is now resolved. No more gushing fuel. Now here's the next question!

Following a 30mile drive yesterday the fuel pump didn't stop ticking at the end of the run, with the ignition still on. I pulled the fuel hose off off the t-piece to the rear carb, and I got a whoosh of air, then a flood of fuel, then nothing. I checked the hose or t-peice we're not blocked. I then checked if the fuel pump would still deliver fuel to the fuel hose, by sticking the end in a glass jar and turning on ignition - it did deliver as normal. So I connected everything back up, turned on ignition, fuel pump ticked as normal until presurized and then stopped as normal. Car runs just fine again now.

So what as the whoosh of air all about? Is there anything else I need to be looking for?

Pointing to possible fuel pump problems - faulty non-return valve - or possibly peforated pick-up pipe in the tank sucking in air with the fuel, or possibly bad hoses and/or connections betwen tank and pump allowing air in, although I would also expect these to allow fuel out particularly on a chrome bumper with its lower pump. If it tends to do it on lower fuel levels it is probably the tank, if intermittently at any fuel level probably the pump or hoses. Keep watching.
