MG MGB Technical - Fuel line

I have a question about the portion of my fuel line that is located under the floor panels on my 72mgb. The fuel line curves/bends down (about 2-3 inches)after leaving the fuel pump, and then is flush with the floor panels until it reaches the engine compartment. This seems unsafe to me to have the fuel line exposed like this but before I go and change it, is there a reason its done this way?
Chip

What seems unsafe about it specifically?
Are you concerned about the line being punctured from flying rocks, gravel etc?
IMHO it has been left exposed so that any problems with the fuel line would be readably visible.
If flying debris is a concern, perhaps covering the most susceptible areas with a piece of rubber hose would suffice?
Hope this helps
