MG MGB Technical - Front Wings

Hi,

Still stripping old paint and things off the GT. The right hand front wing always looks a little crispy and with the paint off and the headlight removed a chance for a closer look. Removing the headlight also took away a large section of the surround where it screws in.

I'm kind of assuming its time to become familiar with how wings are removed and replaced and I shouldn't really attempt to repair it ? Any tips from the assembled experts ?

Its the flat part around the headlight where the rubber gasket goes, about a quarter to a third has come away.

Cheers

Yes Chris it's time for a wing change. The best thing to do is to purchase the new panel and you will see immediately where the fixing holes are. There is the obvious row of bolts along the top then either two or three attaching the wing to the fromt valance and three at the bottom just in front of the sill. Then romove the footwell side trim to find another three. then take out the glovebox and struggle behind the overdrive switch where there are a further three bolts per side.

Now some of these bolts will be well seized. Quite frankly I don't use penetrating oil maybe because I'm too impatient. I use heat from a propane torch. Take care however to ensure that you remove everything that will burn and when heating in the vicinity of underseal wear gloves.

I hate to say this but you are likely to come across a lot more rot under the wings especially on top of the reinforcing trumpet sections of the inner wings.

Good luck

Hi Iain,

Thanks for the reply. The other wing was replaced together with some bits of the reinforcing section (it had a hole at the top with a similar hole in the top triangular bit) so I know what you mean.

Now beginning to regret the stripping, still it will be nice when done. (optimistic mode;-)

Cheers
