MG MGB Technical - Front End Clunk Fixed!

Just wanted to thank all the fellow MG people who provides suggestions on fixing an annoying problem.

Turns out the gearbox was knocking against the transmission tunnel where the gear stick comes thru. One of the three bolts that holds in the gear lever was just touching, when engine/gearbox flexed on mounts. I found by rocking engine sideways I could simulate fault. All I had to do was trim a very small amount of metal from hole and problem fixed.

Please see my original post below.

1974 RB mgb roadster with Rostyle wheels.

Makes a loud metallic clunking noise as you drive along especially on rough surface as the body flexes.
Cannot simulate when car is parked.
Changed all suspension rubbers, shocks and tightened every nut and bolt in the front end.
Not windscreen, door, headlamps and cannot feel thru steering wheel, but can feel thru drivers side floor sill.
Floor pans and sills in good condition with no rust.
The noise appears to be coming from somewhere between door and front wheel.
Have had MG mechanic look at car on hoist.
I apologise for long description but you can see I have spent a lot of time on this problem and it is driving me nuts.
Any suggestions much appreciated.

Look on the bright side, now you won't have to rebuild the front suspension anytime soon. Good fix.

It sounds like you could use an engine mount shim to center the shifter in the hole!

Just as a side note, I had purchased new chrome screws from Moss for the shift boot retainer. Some months later, when I actually got to drive the car, I had an annoying squeak that I couldn't pinpoint. It turned out the screws were longer than original and one was rubbing on the transmission when it moved slightly - just enough to squeak. Thanks Moss! (I mean that jokingly of course!)

Unless Jeff's solution's not enough,at the rear end of the gearbox you can find out a silent bloc tied through a rod onto the crossmember onto the box case. If your gearbox moves that much, that sounds to be relative to that silent bloc assy, either the rearend/crossmember two ones too( just between the crossmember and the box case )
