MG MGB Technical - Foggy rear window

I have a problem with my rear window in the rag top, it is so foggy I can not see anything out of it in my rear view mirror. The window is made of clear vinyl, and has a sort of white haze on it and it will not come of with soap and water.
What I would like to know is, how do I fix this problem, and what caused it?

Thanks Andy

Age, UV, etc. caused it. If the rest of the top's OK, sew in a new piece of clear plastic. I left the old windows in place, then cut them away after sewing in the new. I used some material that's not quite as thick as original because that's all I could find at the time, and it's been fine. I got the clear plastic from a truck tarp place. I did find a place that sells thicker window plastic on the net since then. If there's an upholstery shop that does work on boats near you, that would be a good bet for help on this.

I've never had any luck with chemical treatments for this.

You could try a product called RENOVO - Clear Plastic and Window Polish. It is supposed to 'restore' hazed over windows on soft top sports cars. I use it to clean the windows on my MGC hood, then again my hood is fairly new, but it does keep them clean and clear. Not sure, however, how far a foggy window has to be gone before it's of little use.

Their website is:
http://www.vertar.com/renovo/renovo-clear-plastic-window-polish/

Costs about £10 for a small bottle but their website offers a 14-day Money Back Guarantee so it may be worth a try.

Or I got mine from Woolies:

Good luck

Definitely try Renovo before you try any cutting.
What you have is very normal. I had it on my 6 month old window. Completely opaque and would not clean up. Renovo has made it like new.

There are products out there that should work on your window. Try a plastics supplier or if you live near an airport using airport transfers tunbridge wells, they have products that are used to clean the plexiglas windshields of planes. These products, from my experience, should clear the window and rid it of scratches. I have heard that you can use Brasso but have no experience with this product on windows.

You could also try Cherry Blossom (brand may not be important but consistency and material is) shoe polish or toothpaste.

Cif or Jif which it used to be called in the UK is very good at clearing cloudy plastic windows as long as the cloudiness is not caused by scratching,

All of the above are good ideas.
Try them in a corner first.
But if else fails RENOVO works.
DON'T fit new windows. You can repair what you have.

Thanks for the great information, I will be ordering Renovo and giving it try, hopefully it clears up my rear window. Thanks Andy
