MG MGB Technical - filter hole confusion!

Hi All,
well, i got these pancake air filters .....was going to fit them, but here is something i do not understand. there is a hole, well away from the fitting holes, air hole etc, near the outside rim. If this is left as is, then unfiltered air will get in - i presume i do not want this! its the same on both filters. the only function i can thionk of would be perhaps to connect the two filters together, aka the set up found on the original boxes. why would this be necessary, or am i guessing wrongly - so, final question, do i just plug this up (i tried this, put the filters on, car ran grand, then got concerned and took them off and replaced with old boxes again, until i get the word from you experts!).

Could they be holes for the crankcase ventilation hose? Maybe the hose is split and allows the crankcase fumes to go to both carbs so one won't get all the fumes. Then again I may not have a clue as to what I'm talking about.

Mick. Lewis does have a clue (clew) and is quite correct. Certain versions of the B series engine used a vent to the air filters as part of the engine venting system. Later, this was switched to other forms of venting. But, it would seem that your filters are of a "universal" pattern designed to fit a range of years. If you have some other form of engine venting, plug the holes. Les
