MG MGB Technical - Fender Identification

Hi

Can anyone help identify which fender I have.
I have to replace the passengers side fender (North American car) to appease my body man for addition of Omni flares.
Many years ago due to a roll over I replaced the drivers side fender and would like to match it as I am replacing the R/B as well and the turn signal holes will now be exposed.
Moss explains it:
“Late model fender distance from grill to turn signal mounting hole is 1.314 69-74 ½
Early model fender distance from grill to turn signal mounting hole is 2.90 62-69”
But that distance looks very similar to me, it’s the height/location of the hole which is different.

Hi Bruce,

I'm not totally up on the differences, but I believe your driver's side fender is from a rubber bumper car. Others will correct me if my memory is off, but i think the only difference between the rubber bumper fender & the later chrome bumper ones is that the blinker hole isn't fully cut out on the RB ones. If you're converting to chrome bumpers, you'll likely be cutting out the rest of the hole on the drivers side blinker -- so i believe the net is you can use a fender from any car from '69 on.

I'm again going off memory here, but if memory serves, the early chrome bumper fenders don't have the holes on the side for the side marker lights (unless someone drilled them to use them on a later car of course).

Out of curiousity, why do you need to replace the passenger fender? Does it have prior damage where the flares need to be welded in?

I should have mentioned that my car is a 74.5 (commissioned Nov 74)
When I rolled the car and replaced the drivers side, I cant remember (1990) if I was aware of the importance of my commission date and ordered a 75 or 74 fender.
Of course even though I keep all receipts, I dont have the one for the fender.
I am going to convert over to fiberglass bumpers

The passengers fender has/had some rust around the front headlight which has been repaired 3 times. There was also a hole in the top of the fender which has been repaired and I relocated the antenna so that hole has been welded up as well. I have made the body man aware of the cost of the fenders (he does a lot of work on the local hot rods) and he says this is not the fender I want to use.
The fenders themselves (new) are 649us.

The early and late turn signal positions only refers to chrome bumper cars, the position of the light unit changed for the 69 model year. Rubber bumper cars, which started with the 74 1/2 model year, have a significantly different wing. The indicator assembly on these cars is in the bumper itself so the wing only has a hole for the wires to pass through, plus a hole for an outer bumper mounting point, I think.

Whatever, you would be advised to get a wing that is the mirror image of the one that is remaining on the car! If you removed the bumper to replace the wing in 1990 then if you had bought the 'other' wing the differences would have stuck out like the proverbials on a Bulldog. But even if they are the same, whether chrome bumper or rubber bumper, only you or a photo can say.

Thanks All

I don't know if the fender I am replacing (passengers side) is original or not.
It sounds as if the best idea is to send a picture to my parts supplier and tell him I want a fender just like this one.
