MG MGB Technical - Engine Oil Question

What oil should be used in a newly re-furbished engine, gearbox and diff.

I realize it's different for the diff, but which brand or none.

Can anyone please recommend their favourites, available in the UK.

use cheap 30wt oil for the first 500 miles then switch to 20w-50 oil for the next 2-3000 miles. after 3500 miles i switched to synthetic mobil 1 15-w50

for the tranny, you can use 20w-50...i have Readline MTL in od tranny...

After the first 50 miles or so change the oil. I change the oil even sooner as there are a lot of metal shavings etc that come out of a rebuilt motor. I use regular oil and 10/40 wouldn't be bad.

Prior to the initial start up remove the spark plugs and crank the engine to build up oil pressure before actually starting the engine.

I would leave the gearbox oil in for a few hundred miles and then change it.

Engine wise I use GTX, used to be 20/50 but is now 15/40 but I don't see any differance in the oil pressure.
Gearbox is GTX 20/50 and I've still a little fresh stuff left but I don't know what to use when thats finished.

If the engine is freshly rebuilt with no miles on it, then a running in oil should definitely be used!! Penrite do such an oil. Problems can be had with seating of piston rings etc, if a fresh 20W50 is used straight from the start without bedding it all in...

This should be used for between 250 - 500miles IMO. Then an oil change to 20W50 mineral oil. Change again at total of 1000miles, then 3000 miles and then at 3000mile intervals.

At somewhere around 10-12000miles, you might like to consider a change to synthetic oils such as Mobil 1. This rather depends on your use/wallet etc.

Always change filter with oil.

I believe that the transmission takes 20W50 as well. As for interval changes, i would imagine once in the first 1000miles or so and then maybe at 6000miles then at normal 24000mile intervals. Willing to be told differently there though.
