Is it somebody that riding some of these camshaft in your engine?
my engine being totaly rebuild and i need to decide what cam i should have
want a fastroad cam but not shure howe hot i should go? want to ride the car in town sometimes whit not to much troble

Hi Peter, I have a fast road 270 Oselli cam in my B. I realy like it and it is useable in traffic. However as the late Bill Herring who had a car in a similar state of tune once said to me after a run which seemed to have more than it's fair share of very slow square riggers started in front of us " it wants to GO!" There are cams with overlaps greater than standard, but less than fast road 270s which may be better if you want to avoid the car continually murmuring to you to you, "come on lets boogy." For road use I would not go any further than 270 degrees.

I have a piper 270 and it is no problem for town driving. Think that is equivalent to Kent 715. Buy the Peter Burgess book "How To Power Tune MGB 4-Cylinder Engines"; Speedpro Series; Veloce Publishing; 1996; ISBN 1-903706-77-7
He discusses all the different options with pros and cons.

Some research will be good. This is a very complex area and lots of other factors will afffect driveabilty. With the poor filling you get at low revs with a lot of overlap you need to up the compression ratio, or do other things to get tolerable filling when off the cam. Severl things were done on my car when the cam went on ,all of it aimed to work together. I took advise from a a specialist and was very pleased with the results. I'm sure you can also spend a lot of money, and get it wrong.

Peter:

Stay away from Crane cams: It's not there is a problem with the cams themselves, but they do not carry any of the gear required to complete the job. The do not sell lifters for this application and they do not sell the offset keys that will be required to set the cam. I have gone through all of this and will not recomend Crane as an option.

When you get a new cam, I highly recomend getting all the valvetrain bits from the same supplier.

Can lifter wear is a bit of a concern with these engines, so check the archives for more info.

Hello Peter,

after trying different grids in my B's engine, I would allways go for the PIPER 285/2 again.

Good performance with ported head, and also very well at low engine speed, although more expensive than other brands, it was worth the money more than the other ones.
