MG MGB Technical - Brake Servo Finish

I have two brake servo units from a 77 & a 80 MGB.
Both have some surface rust & need to be refinished. Painting seems like a bad choice given the proximity to brake fluid. Any comments on how to improve the appearance of these units? Thanks in advance.

Pat. Are you in Watertown, N.Y.? My mothers family is from that area.

As to your question, what I do is disassemble the units, bead blast the exterior surface, clean everything, then use Gunkote on them. This is a product originally developed for use with tank cannons and is sprayed on, then baked in an oven for an hour to harden it. When baked on, it is resistant to most solvents, including brake fluid. Do a websearch for Brownells, Inc. which has Gunkote in spray cans. Not inexpensive, but holds up very well. I have been using it on clutch master cylinders for several years with no problems. Les

The one on my car had been sprayed flat black by a PO, along with everything else in that area. Since it worked fine I didn't want to replace it, and I don't have a bead blaster. Here's what I did...

I primed it with Rustoleum "Hard Hat" primer, then painted it with the same type of paint in aluminum color, then clear coated it. The aluminum paint by itself is too bright, but the clear coat tones it down quite a bit. So far, it's holding up just fine - but then I'm careful not to get brake fluid anywhere but in the reservoir! You can see it pretty well in a couple of pics on this page:

Try painting it with Bill Hirsch's Miracle Paint. It is impervious to brake fluid and almost everything else. Used it for almost 20 years and it's great but nasty smelling. It flows well and if you use a foam brush goes on well with no brush marks.
