MG MGB Technical - Brake ?

I had brake fluid leaking from the area that the brake fluid reservoir sits. Now I pulled off the reservoir the other day and noticed that where the metal piece (that the reservoirs sits) and the piece that it attaches to I think the master cylinder. Anyways there was not a gasket between these two. Could this be the cause of my leaking problems? It appears to be corroded in this area and no cracks noticed on the reservoir. Also is their any specific thing needed to be used as a gasket (can I use that liquid gasket, or paper gasket material to make my own)? Thanks

Hi G, get yourself a Moss catalogue, it makes describing the fault easier, also helps to figure what is missing. With brakes the best bet is to start off looking at what is worn out, and replacing it for new, else you end up hitting something.

If you have a Haynes MGB repair manual look at pages 156 & 157 for drawings of the MGB tandem master cylinders. You will need some reservior seals to stop the leak. For the master cylinder used on the rubber bumper cars you will need some port adapters in addition to the O ring seals. The parts need aren't listed or shown in the Moss catalog. I don't know of a source for these parts. In any case this is not something you can fix with paper gaskets or liquid in a tube, you need the correct parts to get the leak repaired. I don't recall if a repair kit includes the reservoir seals. It sometimes helps if you tell us the model year of your car. Good luck, Clifton

Here is what I have found out about the names of the parts. Between the MASTER CYLINDER and the SERVO ASSEMBLY there was no gasket. Also I have another question looking at the pictures from the Moss catalog. It state from 76 on it has a square reservoir however mine is wedge shaped has some replace mine with older parts? Also is it common for these parts to leak at this point of attachment (master cylinder/servo area)?

No fluid should leak out of the master cylinder. If you're getting fluid out from between the master and servo, it's not that a seal between them is bad, but rather the master is faulty.

I will take another look at it and see if I can find the true area of the link. Thanks .
