MG MGB Technical - BMC-B Series engine

I have a 1966 mgb roadster which has a BMC-B series 1800cc petrol engine. It is using a lot of oil so I am planning to do a refurb. during the winter. I had a lot of trouble getting a water pump that was suitable for this engine as the standard MGB pumps wouldn't fit. Does anyone have experience of this engine? Will the standard MGB engine parts e.g. head gasket, piston rings, valve guides etc. fit this engine? I am very concerned that I split the engine and then can't get the parts as per the water pump!

Moss in Bradford will have everything you will need.

Thanks for your reply Colin, that is very re-assuring!

You will need to know the engine number, i.e. whether it is 3-bearing or 5-bearing at least. Many components including water pumps are dependant on this. For the 5-bearing there are short-nose and long-nose pumps. Both fit, but each requires the appropriate pulley to line up with the crank etc. and if you use the short nose with the shallow pulley you need a spacer between that and the fan.

Why didn't the std MGB water pump fit?

Apart from the water pump
It might pay to get your breather system checked out--depending on which type is fitted to yours,,they are a tiddle prone to failure causing oil consumption issues
