MG MGB Technical - Batteries

I recently aquired a '73 mgb roadster that needs some restoration. Currently, it runs of two six volt batteries wired in series to produce twelve volts. I was wondering if there would be an advantage or disadvantage to replacing the two sixes with one twelve volt battery. Thanks

Welcome to MGDom! There's lots of discussion of this in the archives. In a nutshell, a single Group 26 12v battery will give more cranking power with fewer connections to corrode, for less money and less weight than the corresponding twin 6v units. Unless you're doing a concours restoration, there's no good argument for sticking with the 6v batteries (IMO)....

I have a 73 MGB that I have also been restoring. I changed from two six volt batteries to one 12 volt. It is easier to maintain and works terrific - and like Rob said, it is less connections. The main thing I like about it is that I now have an extra storage compartment where the second battery was located. I bought one of the Moss plastic liners that drops straight into the opening and I now have a dry, clean extra storage compartment.

When you buy the Group 26 12 volt battery examine it closely to be sure that is does not have the mounting lip on it. If it has the mounting lip, it will jam partway down. You want the one without a mounting lip. I highly recommend an Interstate battery. Excellent battery, sold everywhere, so warranty service is readily available, although you'll probably never need it.
