MG MGB Technical - Alternative Front Rubber Bumper

Does anyone know if there is a light weight replacement for the OEM front rubber bumper. Perhaps one made of fiberglass or composite.
S Rechter

Never heard of one, sounds like a business opportunity. Probably could mold one off an existing bumper.
John

Huffaker Engineering used to offer one when Joe used
to run the place.

Since Jr. took over operations, Huffaker's focus has
moved on to other cars and MGB stuff does not seem
to figuire in their product line.

I don't have experience with this company, but I've only heard positive comments on other MBG forums.

Just when you think you got a good business idea you learn someone is already doing it. Does anyone know the weight of the rubber bumpers? I was just wondering how much weight will be taken off with a conversion to the fiberglass.
John

Hi all.

Has anyone investigated the possibility of removing material (and weight) from an original rubber bumper ?.

The rubber bumpers each weight 20kg. Thats the weight at least of the ones I pulled off my car. I am leaving them off and just having fibreglass Sebring valences.

I haven't had a close look at them but inside there is a huge steel beam. Maybe you can remove or lighten that somehow (to the detriment of it strength of course).

Hi, I am the guy making the fiberglass replicas. Team Liebre.
The front and rear stock bumpers weigh in at around 90+ pounds. If you want to retain the stock look you can use my replica fiberglass bumpers and cut much of the steel support away then bond my bumper to the pieces left. Alternatively, you could fab up some steel or aluminum brackets which would further cut weight. You will however want to retain the reinforcing rod which goes over the top of the grill opening since invariably someone will grab this to move the car at some point. When you bond my fiberglass unit onto this bar it ends up stronger than the original!
I also make a modified rear bumper which eliminates the mounting brackets and simply bolts or rivets through the rear trunk wall and has a recess for the license plate.
My modified front bumper which is the lightest option mounts to the weld nuts used for the valence and allows for the use of a chrome grill. Cutting of the bumper stanchions is required for this on an RB car similar to modifying for chrome bumpers.
Shameless plug, I know but these questions are the ones constantly asked.
I just added some new pics to my site showing a variety of customer's cars with the bumpers and my flares also.

Thomas,

I have watched your website with interest ever since the production moved from Florida.

Any plans to make an RV8 style hood. I would love to have an RV8 hood with the bulge dimesioned to accomodate a 14" air cleaner. :)

How many rear bumpers do you make? I see the stock replica rubber bumper, modified RB, & mod. RB another view. From what I can tell, the last two are not actually the same bumper (nor is the tailpipe ;)). I prefer the last one, but how low is that tag?

Thanks.
Carl Floyd

Tom, Can you or have you in the past made a RB bumper to replicate a continental spare tire mount? Thanks, Victor
victor gardino

I make the replica bumper which duplicates the stock front and rear and the modified front for using a grill and a modified rear which has the plate cut out. The plate mounts with the bottom edge slightly below the bottom of the rear valence.
No continental kit or plans for one.
I may explore the RV8 version later this year but I also want to replicate what I feel is a very nice hardtop version which I have never seen other than in this picture:

Someone is making the v8 hood. I've seen them installed at the britishmotoring shop near Daytona FL. I always wondered why the functioning cobra shaker hoodscoop with the v8 is not used with the standard or v8 hood. The shaker scoop is reproduced. Now that would look cool.

My mistake. It was the C style hood that I saw used with a v8 install.
Thomas, what turnsignals are on the one pictured that are round? They look like small pointed running lights? My 74 got crunched in the front pass side. The donor 79 fender has a dif mount for turn signals so I was going to fill both fenders and use a light such as you have pictured.

I believe those were either a generic Lucas or maybe Healey lights. Sorry I can't be more specific the customer secured them himself.
Thomas Rynne

Tom,

I can't help but notice the 'B on your site with New Mini headlights fitted. They look pretty cool. I was wondering if you were involved in that modification, and if so how much work was involved?
dave

Dave, that was a customer done mod. Notice the fenders actually block part of the headlight off. Tony Barnhill is doing a similar mod on his V8 project using fiberglass fenders which works much better. I think he has $500 plus in each fender??
Check out his progress here:

Thomas, that is a good looking top, kinda sleek looking. Probably the best looking hard top I have seen.

I am one of the satisfied customers with cars shown on Thomas website. Mine is the Mallard Green 78 shown in 2 pictures. Just wanted to add that his bumpers/spoilers are very high quality, well fitting, heavy pieces of fiberglass. It fit perfectly and required only minimal finishing before painting. My paint and body man was scepticle at first when I told him what I wanted to do, but when he saw the piece he installed and primed/painted it for 40 dollars. Also the front bumper mounts can easly be removed with a cuttoff wheel, but a plasma cutter is faster.
