MG MGB Technical - '72 B Brake master missing circlip?

I am rebuilding the brake master cylinder from a '72. After popping the circlip out and sliding the entire piston assembly out, it looks pretty decent and rebuildable. Looking into the big bore where the large lip seal is, I see another groove that is cut under the lip seal and nylon location for a possible second circlip. Did a PO forget to put this in. The thicker metal washer under the large seal drops in below this groove and the spacing looks like this was needed to keep everything from moving.
Also, the stainless piston has some scoring about 1/2" up from the large lip seal and seems like a possible leak point. How far does the average piston travel during normal braking?
Thanks, I'm new to these rebuilds.
